How My “Lost at Sea” Remix Opened Pavel Khvaleev’s Figura X‑Mas Compilation
A remix can have a longer life than its original release suggests. My version of Pavel Khvaleev’s “Lost at Sea” first appeared on the song’s remix EP, returned on a full remix album and was later selected to open Khvaleev’s year-end Figura X‑Mas compilation.
The original track brought together Pavel Khvaleev with vocalists Blackfeel Wite and Avis Vox. Khvaleev was already an established figure in electronic music: he co-founded the project Moonbeam, whose international releases and performances helped place the duo at No. 42 in the DJ Mag Top 100 DJs ranking in 2010.
Creating a remix for one of his records meant working with material that already had a strong vocal identity and a producer with extensive experience across progressive house, trance and techno.
Reworking “Lost at Sea”
My task was to create an independent interpretation rather than a minor variation of the original production.
I retained the vocal performances by Blackfeel Wite and Avis Vox but rebuilt the musical environment around them. The result was a more compact, club-oriented version with a slower 110 BPM pulse and a darker rhythmic character.
The “Lost at Sea” EP was released by Figura Music on June 27, 2017. It contained four versions: Khvaleev’s club mix, a remix by Yuji Ono, my remix and the video edit.
Being included alongside the original producer’s own club version gave each remixer a clear creative challenge. The same song had to remain recognizable while working as a separate record with its own structure and production language.
From the EP to Rebirth Remixes
The collaboration did not end with the original EP.
In March 2018, Pavel included my version on his ten-track album Rebirth Remixes. The collection brought together new interpretations of material from his Rebirth period, positioning “Lost at Sea” within a broader retrospective of his work.
For a remix producer, this kind of second placement matters. The track was not limited to one release campaign: it remained part of how Khvaleev chose to represent that chapter of his catalogue.
Opening Figura X‑Mas
The remix received a third placement at the end of 2018.
Released on December 24, Figura X‑Mas (Compiled & Mixed by Pavel Khvaleev) collected fourteen Figura Music tracks and a 63-minute continuous DJ mix.
“Lost at Sea (Nevelskiy Remix)” was placed first in the compilation’s tracklist.
An opening track establishes the atmosphere and direction of a compilation. Pavel was not simply approving the remix for release again; he selected it as the entry point into his year-end overview of Figura Music.
The collection continued with music by Anton Ishutin, Eva Pavlova, Escenda, TÍHO, Ivan Starzev, Daniil Waigelman, Idy Ramy and other artists connected with the label’s progressive, deep and tech-house catalogue.
That context is what makes the placement meaningful. My remix became part of a curated release assembled and mixed by an experienced international electronic producer—and was given the first position in the sequence.
“Lost at Sea” shows how a remix can develop beyond its initial function. What began as one alternative version of a vocal single went on to appear across three Figura Music releases and became the opening track of the label’s year-end compilation.
