Deep Tone & Nevelskiy: Three Releases, One Working Relationship

Yesterday "I Don't Want to Wait" came out — my third release with Deep Tone. It's a good moment to lay out how we work together, because across these three records the roles are different each time, and that's the point.
I know Deep Tone from Krasnodar, where I taught him production in Ableton and DJing when he was starting out. These three releases are what that turned into.
The three releases
Stay (Deep Tone Remix) — Nevelskiy, Oia & Alex Sate · Loony House Major · 2020
Rainbow Bridge — Nevelskiy, Deep Tone & Katya RED · June 2021
I Don't Want to Wait — Deep Tone, Nevelskiy & Nasteisha · Impure / Proton · November 2021
2020 — "Stay": a guided remix
Deep Tone's first release with me is a remix. I give him one of my tracks — "Stay," which I composed with Oia and Alex Sate — to remix, and I guide him through it. A remix is a contained first assignment: the song already exists, so he can focus on production and arrangement without also carrying the writing. It comes out on my label, Loony House Major.
June 2021 — "Rainbow Bridge": I lead, he's on the record
On "Rainbow Bridge," with Katya RED, I'm credited as composer, lyricist and producer, and Deep Tone is one of the artists. I'm driving the record; he's fully in it.
November 2021 — "I Don't Want to Wait": peers
On "I Don't Want to Wait," with vocalist Nasteisha, we work as equals — I'm one of the producers alongside Deep Tone, a genuinely shared record rather than one I lead. It's out on Impure via Proton, and it ships with a full run of remixes from other producers, which is its own sign the track is landing in the scene.
What it adds up to
A guided remix, then a record I lead with him on it, then a record we make side by side — inside eighteen months. That's what teaching someone is for: you hand them a contained task, and you keep working until you're standing next to them as equals.
